This is the moment hospital surgeons call in firefighters to help save an injured workman whose arm has been impaled by three bundles of 20-inch metal rods.

The painful accident happened in the city of Zaoyang in Central China’s Hubei Province, where the unnamed worker fell at a construction site on 16th August.

The patient, who is reportedly around 50 years old, landed on three bundles of metal rods used for the production of reinforced concrete.

Hospital footage shows how the steel bars, each of which measured some 20 inches long, skewered his left arm, impaling his flesh and coming out the other side.

Medics at Zaoyang First People’s Hospital received the workman with the metal rods still in his arm, with firefighters having cut them at the base and leave them in his limb to prevent blood loss.

However, the surgeons later called the firemen back to help shorten the steel bars, and video shows the rescuers clipping the metal rods with large cutters.

In the operating room, hydraulic cutters were also used to further shorten the rods.

The fire service said “nearly 20” metal bars were successfully cut after about 30 minutes, allowing doctors the room to surgically remove the remaining sections inside the patient’s left arm.

The worker was still recovering in hospital at the time of writing, and it is unclear whether he will experience any long-term effects from the injury.

The worker is reportedly part of a construction crew currently building the city’s new canal system.
