Emergency responders told local media that Patrizia La Marca had pieces of her body torn away and that they had “never seen anything like it”.

The fatal mauling took place in Ventimiglia, a resort town in the province of Imperia, in northern Italy, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 5th April, at around 4pm, with the victim found with dramatic bites to her head, her arms, her chest and her shoulders, according to local media.

Patrizia was at her brother’s, who is reportedly a well-known trade unionist in the area, to feed his dog while he and his wife, both unnamed, were away on holiday for a few days.

But she was suddenly attacked by the Rottweiler, which ripped chunks of her body apart as she tried to fight it off.

Patrizia was later found in a pool of blood by neighbours who reportedly called the Carabinieri and the emergency services.

The police then shot and injured the animal, which is now in a kennel under judicial control.

Patrizia was then flown to hospital by helicopter but she sadly passed away.

One shocked emergency worker reportedly told local media: “The body was torn apart in several places, a very serious clinical situation, I have never seen anything like it.”

It is currently unclear if the injured dog will be put down.

The authorities are investigating the incident.
