This image shows how a white horse walked into a bank with its owner to withdraw some cash from an ATM.

The startling photo was taken inside a branch of the Itau bank in the town of Varzea Paulista in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

The owner of the white horse, who did want to be identified, told reporters he had gone to have some food in a restaurant which did not accept card payments.

He then went to withdraw cash and reportedly decided to take his horse into the bank with him because he was scared thieves would steal the animal if he left it outside.

The horse is reportedly nine years old and called Imperador. Reports state the animal was found abandoned and mistreated in the city of Jundiai in the same state two years ago.

The current owner adopted the horse and took care of it.

The bank manager of the branch reportedly recommended customers not to enter with animals for the security of the customers and the animals. However, there is nothing specifically preventing customers from entering the bank with an animal.

The bank confirmed no damage had been done to the branch in the incident.

It is unclear if the owner subsequently took the horse into the pub.
