Car owner Guillermo Montejia told local media: “We were driving along when suddenly the front of the vehicle disappeared.

“Thankfully, we were wearing our seat belts and that saved us. A lorry was coming up behind us and if it had hit us, we would not be here to tell the story! In this regard, we were very lucky.”

He added: “We were scared we would be crushed by the tarmac, but we are both fine.”

Montejia explained that the lorry driver stopped to help them get out of the sinkhole before the authorities arrived to close the stretch of road.

The damaged vehicle was then lifted out of the hole by a crane, as seen in the second video clip.

According to the Provincial Entity of Water and Sanitation (EPAS), the sinkhole was caused by a damaged underground drainage pipe.

The slip road is expected to open again after two days of maintenance work, according to the local authorities.
