This unusual cloud had locals unsure if it was a huge tornado after it appeared on the Black Sea coast.

The images were taken in the city of Novorossiysk in the Karsnodar Krai region of south-western Russia after the unusual cloud was spotted over the sea across from the city.

Local media report residents in the city believed they had seen a tornado heading for the residential area and shared photos of the ‘vortex’ on social media.

In the images, the tornado-shaped clouds can be seen in the sky appearing to form over the sea. Other images show how the apparent vortex then became a tube-shaped cloud on the horizon.

The clouds are actually volutus clouds which form as long, horizontal tubes, detached from any other clouds in their vicinity.

They are caused by differences in wind speed and direction between the surface and higher altitudes.

Netizen ‘Anna Mikhailusova’ wrote: “I get speechless when I find photos like that. People were not afraid just to sit around and take footage. I would have been on my way to a safe place right away.”

While ‘Zhanna Homitch’ added: “If you look closer it becomes clear pretty quickly that it is not a tornado.”

And ‘Dina Yatchenko’ commented: “The way this thing ‘flows’ certainly reminds me of a tornado…”

Local media report that such clouds are rarely seen in the area.
