This is the newborn baby girl abandoned with her umbilical cord still attached in a cardboard box left outside a mosque sparking a hunt to find the tot’s parents.

The baby was reportedly found by a young boy outside the Ara Kuda Mosque in the town of Tasek Gelugor in the north-western Malaysian state of Penang.

According to local media, members of the congregation were carrying out their midday prayers when a boy entered the mosque and said that a baby had been abandoned on the pavement outside.

Stunned worshippers went to look and saw a baby girl sleeping inside a cardboard box.

Eyewitness Ahmad Abdullah, 59, was one of the devotees called outside by the boy.

He told local media: “The box was on the pavement [in front] of the mosque. We, the members of the congregation, were shocked on discovering the baby.”

Abdullah said that the baby was sleeping and they took her inside the mosque before alerting the local authorities.

He claimed that the newborn was in a healthy state and still had the umbilical cord attached.

She had been wrapped in a clothing garment and left on the pavement inside the box.

Police spokesman Noorzainy Mohd Noor confirmed that an abandoned baby had been found outside the mosque and said that she had been sent to Kepala Batas Hospital for tests.

An investigation to find the baby’s parents is underway.
