This is the moment a 20-person rescue team saves a trapped kitten from a sewer pipe during an eight-hour rescue bid.

The incident took place in the municipality of Arucas in the province of Las Palmas in the Spanish region of the Canary Islands after the kitten became trapped in the pipe.

Although it is unknown how the cat got into the sewer system, it was reportedly stuck there for nearly 48 hours and fighting off attacks by rats until it was finally rescued.

A resident heard its faint meows and called the emergency services and workers from the animal organisation ‘Tutela Felina Arucas’ joined firefighters at the scene.

After several failed attempts at trying to reach the kitten, firefighters used a camera to identify its exact position and decided to cut a hole in the ground to lift it out.

However, the overall operation took longer than expected and firefighters and volunteers spent around eight hours trying to free the cat.

It was already night and a large group of people had gathered by the time the kitten was plucked to safety, wrapped in a towel and given some water, as seen in the video footage.

According to local media, the cat was checked by a vet and was found to have multiple injuries including rat bites for which it is receiving treatment.
