This is the tree that seemingly “grew” out of the roof of a parked car overnight much to the delight of locals before it was apparently torched by a bunch of thugs causing widespread consternation and dismay.

The incredible images, which first made headlines on Monday when the art project was discovered one morning by locals, appear to show a tree growing out of the roof of a parked white Renault Scenic.

Many were delighted to find the work of art in their area of greater Nantes, in the north-western French department of Loire-Atlantique, on Monday morning and took pictures and selfies with the original installation which was made by the Royal de Luxe street theatre collective.

These images show how a tree appears to have shot out of the ground beneath the vehicle, puncturing the roof over the driver’s seat and shooting into the air.

Sadly, it was not to last as last night (Tuesday) it was reportedly torched, with locals in the Bellevue area of town, waking up this morning to find the car partially burned.

Less than 48 hours after being set up in the Mendes-France square, in the Bellevue area of Saint-Herblain, which is in the Nantes suburbs, it was reportedly torched, with locals speculating the culprits came from another part of town.

According to police officers quoted in local media, the installation was vandalised, with the unnamed source adding: “During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the impaled car was set alight. The work of art was being watched over but this did stop the perpetrators from fleeing the scene.”

According to the latest reports, the perpetrators were still being sought this morning (Wednesday). Many locals have shared their sadness over the car being set on fire. According to some reports, the fire has caused for even more people to turn up to take selfies in front of the burnt vehicle.

The Royal de Luxe street theatre company is led by Jean-Luc Courcoult and comprised of “inventors, stuntmen, poets and scrap-dealers all at once”. It was founded in 1979 and has performed all over France and abroad in Belgium, England, Germany, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Ireland.

This latest installation was to draw attention to another upcoming event scheduled for Friday, according to local media.

The Royal de Luxe street theatre company was behind Liverpool’s Dream, a three-day outdoor performance featuring marionettes that took place in Liverpool, England, between 5th and 7th October 2018.
