A man has had his face eaten by his five rottweilers after being knocked off a ladder during storm Ciara and rescuers were too late to save him after the vicious dogs stopped them from reaching him in time.

The incident took place at around 6pm on Sunday 9th February at 7 Avenue du Chateau in Acqueville in the Calvados department in the north-western French region of Normandy when the man, unnamed in local media but said to be 69, fell off his ladder just as storm Ciara was hitting the country.

Firefighters were called to the scene by the victim’s wife but when they arrived at 8:45pm, they came face to face with five “very menacing” rottweilers that stopped them from approaching the victim, according to a police source quoted in local media.

The same police spokesperson also stated that the dog’s had “inflicted injuries on their master’s face.” These injuries are said to have occurred a few seconds after he had fallen.

A specialist police unit trained to deal with canines was called out but they also failed to control the rottweilers, so the order was given for three of the dogs – the most aggressive – to be shot so he could be rescued.

The two other dogs were reportedly taken inside the house by the victim’s wife, who has not been named either. She was taken to hospital in “a state of shock” according to a neighbour quoted in local media but is otherwise unharmed.

But sadly the victim died. An autopsy is reportedly underway in order to determine the exact cause of death.
