These images show the aftermath of a landslide which sent a giant car-sized boulder smashing into the side of a passenger coach.

Authorities said the accident in the township of Shangtianba, which is in Leibo County in China’s south-western province of Sichuan, killed three people and left at least 14 others injured.

Video taken by passengers who escaped the wreckage shows the bloodstained boulder having caused a large crater in the right side of the bus.

Windows are shattered and the metal frame is badly misshapen, with the large boulder – which is the size of a small car – resting on the road next to the coach.

According to reports, the rockslide happened at 9:30am local time today (28th June) and sent multiple smaller rocks as well as the boulder rolling onto the mountain road.

The affected long-distance bus was headed towards Leibo County centre from the city of Xichang in the same province.

Footage of the aftermath shows at least one victim lying seemingly lifeless on the road, while survivors move further up the road in a bid to avoid another rockslide.

The county’s Emergency Management Office has sealed off the road.

It has not released any further information regarding the victims, but said it was investigating whether or not the coach had been overcrowded.
