According to local media, Carolina was kept in a cell with her one-year-old daughter for three hours after she was reported for an alleged case of infidelity.

The snap shows the mother behind bars with her daughter between her legs wearing a hoodie.

The mother’s age and the indigenous tribe she belongs to are unclear.

Reports state the practice is common in the municipality as infidelity is punished by 24 hours in prison even though the criminal law in Oaxaca does not recognise it as an offence.

Local media report the Oaxaca Office for the Defence of Citizens is already investigating the case and they have already contacted the local authorities in the municipality.

This is not the first case of an indigenous woman being imprisoned with her children in the state of Oaxaca.

An indigenous woman was reportedly seized and locked in prison with ehr children by police at the beginning of November after she went to the police station to ask for her husband who had previously been arrested.

The case was shared on social media and several Facebook profiles denounced the police abuse in the town of San Juan Mazatlan in the state of Oaxaca in south-western Mexico.
