A high school student has died after a ceiling caved in at her school.
Maggie Mahmoud, a 16-year-old secondary student, was killed after the classroom ceiling partially collapsed at the American Public School in the city of Tripoli in Lebanon.
The tragic incident, which left a second student named Shatha Darwish, 16, injured, occurred on Wednesday, 2nd November, according to local media reports.
An image of the teens’ blood-stained classroom surfaced on social media shortly after Maggie’s death.
In the photograph, a fallen concrete block lies across Maggie’s old desk.
The fatal collapse caused outrage among local residents who blocked off some of the streets surrounding the school. They claim to have informed authorities of their concerns regarding the run-down state of the building prior to the incident.
This was before an inspection was carried out by the city council that confirmed their fears, said the residents.
They went on to add that despite the fact that the inspection committee informed the educational regional department that the structure presented serious issues, no changes were made to the building.
A school staff member who wishes to remain anonymous then told local media that the school knocked down what may have been a load-bearing wall to make the school classroom bigger before putting a stone archway in its place prior to the collapse.
The case is now being investigated by the relevant authorities with the aid of local engineers.
The injured student Shatha is reported to be in stable condition in the hospital.
The school has yet to make a statement regarding the incident.
MP Ashraf Rifi has now criticised what has been described as a “lack of interest” on the part of Tripoli authorities in the over 400 run-down buildings in the city that are currently on the verge of complete or partial collapse, according to reports.
