The chilling slaying took place in Bagcilar, Istanbul, Turkey on 2nd November.

Local media reported that businessman Faruk Karabulak, 38, waited for his wife Kudret Karabulak, 32, to fall asleep before placing a pillow over her face.

He then fired a shot through it with a handgun.

Neighbours heard the gunshot and called emergency services.

But before police could arrive on the scene, Karabulak allegedly grabbed their eight-year-old daughter and fled the scene while her mother bled to death.

Karabulak took the girl to her maternal grandmother’s home and left her there before fleeing a second time.

Paramedics who arrived at the couple’s home were only able to pronounce Kudret dead. Her body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

Police were able to quickly track down and arrest the suspect at the scene of the crime.

He reportedly said in his statement to police: “My business was going badly, I had debts. I had been arguing with my wife for months.

“I was planning to commit suicide after killing my wife. My daughter woke up to the sound of gunfire. I left her with her grandmother.

“Then I came back to the scene and gave up on suicide.”

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July last year.

According to the 2021 Annual Data Report announced by the ‘We Will Stop Femicide Platform’, 280 women were killed by men in 2021, while 217 women were found suspiciously dead.

According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’ – a “digital memorial for women killed by violence” that is updated daily – 336 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
