A pizza delivery guy from Germany has tragically lost his leg and then his life after reportedly being hit by an SUV driven by an apparently drunken driver.

Hezbullah A., 23, was just about to deliver his last pizza order for the night when he was hit by a Mercedes-Benz SUV in the German city of Hamburg at Lohbrugger Street on Monday (9th August).

The driver of the SUV, identified only as Ismael S., 29, was a sales representative who had just signed a rental agreement for a new apartment in the municipality of Aumuhle am Sachsenwald in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Hezbullah moved to Germany from Afghanistan around 10 years ago, and was studying gastronomy while working as a delivery man for four months.

He reportedly sent his salary to his parents in Afghanistan each month to support them.

Local media said that the 23-year-old man was about to finish his shift and was on the way to his car parked nearby when the SUV suddenly appeared and struck him.

According to the fire brigade, the 29-year-old man who was allegedly driving around town under the influence of alcohol hit the pizza delivery guy and tore off his leg while Hezbullah “catapulted through the air” due to the impact.

The SUV then crashed into a Skoda which tipped over along with a startled couple sitting inside, after which a total of 30 paramedics, firefighters and doctors came to the site.

According to Bild, three other cars parked nearby were damaged during the incident.

The unlucky couple and the supposedly drunken driver were brought to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, while Hezbullah underwent surgery at the Boberg Special Hospital immediately after the crash, but succumbed to the injuries and died on Tuesday (10th August).

A colleague who worked with Hezbullah told Bild: “We all liked him. He was hard working and was always reliable. It’s unbelievable.”

Another local resident who heard the sound of the crash added: “Unfortunately, people often drive very quickly here. I heard the siren, I saw the blue light from the balcony. I am deeply affected that someone died here on my doorstep.”

The police took away the 29-year-old’s driver’s licence and seized his vehicle and are currently investigating whether he was over the speed limit.

Police spokesman Thilo Marxsen said: “Specialists from the Traffic Accident Service South took over the investigation. To reconstruct the accident, they called in an expert and used a 3D scanner.”

A blood test should reveal whether Ismael S., who faces charges of negligent homicide, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the police “there were indications of alcohol and drugs”.

The investigation continues.
