This is the moment – seen over a million times – a pensioner loses his footing on an escalator and rolls head over heels down the steps before he is saved by a hero bus driver.

Footage from the city of Zhengzhou East Railway Station, which is in Central China’s Henan Province, shows the unnamed pensioner in his 70s climbing the escalator to reach a footbridge.

The man holding a bag in one hand and his walking stick in the other rides the device out of frame but suddenly re-emerges again seconds later.

He is seen rolling uncontrollably down the metal step as he loses his footing and is unable to stop himself from tumbling downwards.

The elderly resident rolls several times until two witnesses, including bus driver Kang Yawei, rush over and help steady him, sitting him on the steps.

Kang, who operates the city’s route 2 bus, said he and the other rescuer helped the pensioner to the top. They then left when the man said he did not require any medical treatment.

The elderly man suffered abrasions to his face but was not seriously injured, Kang said.

Kang, who has been a bus driver for five years, recalled: “I offered to drive him to hospital, but he insisted he was fine.

“He didn’t seem to be in much pain and was walking normally, so I let him go and returned to my passengers.”

Kang was stopped near the footbridge waiting for passengers to board when he spotted the falling pensioner.
