The Utah Avalanche Centre (UAC) reported that the solo skier, whose name was not disclosed by media, was “caught, carried, and partially buried in a drainage” near Salt Lake City, in Utah, USA.

The incident reportedly occurred following an “unintentionally triggered” avalanche in the Thomas Fork park, in Neff’s Canyon, on Wednesday, 14th December.

But then another skier travelling alone up the bottom of the canyon found the injured man buried chest-deep in debris, after he had heard his cries for help.

According to a statement by the UAC, the first skier was buried for less than an hour before the second ski enthusiast came across him.

The UAC said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The second person then called 911 and began to extract the first skier.

“The first skier sustained serious injuries from the avalanche.”

Shortly emergency crews from Salt Lake County Search and Rescue, Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, and the Department of Public Safety arrived at the site.

They then used a toboggan to transfer the injured person downhill to the Neff’s summer trail.

He was then carried to the Neff’s Canyon trailhead with a snowmobile, where an ambulance picked him and took him to a nearby medical facility.

The UAC said: “Thanks to the collaboration of search and rescue crews, the injured skier from Neffs’s Canyon has been evacuated to the trailhead and is on their way to the hospital.

“The avalanche danger for the elevation and aspect where this avalanche occurred was rated as Considerable on the day of the accident.”
