This footage shows a high-rise flat in flames after a secondary school pupil allegedly punched his mother and then set fire to their home in a row over his school marks.

The fire caused a widespread evacuation in the Yinpenling Residential District in Changsha, capital of China’s central province of Hunan on 8th May.

The local fire service dispatched two fire engines and 14 firefighters to the scene after the blaze was spotted by neighbouring residents.

According to the police, the schoolboy, who is around 15 years of age, struck his mother after the pair began arguing over his apparently less than ideal marks following recent exams.

The teenager is then believed to have taken a lighter and set fire to a blanket, causing the large fire that later spread to the rest of the flat.

The fire service evacuated the residential building and began tackling the fire, which was put out roughly 30 minutes later.

Footage taken from nearby buildings shows flames and dark plumes of smoke spewing from the family’s home and travelling up the rest of the building.

Authorities say the fire affected an area of roughly 860 square feet.
