A mother has been arrested after hospital officials discovered her baby was missing and when they questioned her, she said she had thrown it in the bin.

The mother, whose name and age have not been revealed, reportedly gave birth at the General Hospital Rio Carrion in the city of Palencia in the north-western Spanish region of Castile and Leon.

But when medics noticed the baby was absent and quizzed the mother, she told them that she threw the child in a wheelie bin because “it was not alive”.

A search for the baby has so far failed to yield any results, and hospital staff have alerted police who arrested the mother, even though the baby’s body has not yet been found.

Police spokesperson Monserrat Marin told local media that the alleged dumping site has been cordoned off and an investigation is underway.

Acting on the mother’s confession the judge in charge of the case is keeping the details secret as it is possible other people, possibly relatives, could be involved, according to reports.

The mother’s arrest and detention in custody has taken place several days after other parents, identified as Daniel and Sonia, were detained for throwing their live baby into River Carrion in the same province.

At the time, Sonia claimed that the baby was already dead but the local authorities established it was still alive at the time, according to reports.

The couple is being held in custody as the probe continues.
