This is the shocking moment a 22-year-old BMW driver rams two women on a zebra crossing while overtaking another car at speed.

The incident was filmed near Anichkov Palace on Nevsky Avenue running through the centre of Saint Petersburg, a Russian port city on the Baltic Sea, at around 11:20 pm on 24th September.

The speeding driver tried to overtake a car while approaching a zebra crossing at speed, and reportedly rammed two women aged 25 and 22, both currently being treated in hospital.

According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the eldest victim is in hospital in a serious condition while the 22-year-old woman is said to be in a stable state.

The news site Paper said one victim suffered a head injury, a broken femur, and heavy blood loss.

On 26th September, the Kuibyshevsky District Court of Saint Petersburg said the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Askhat Aybazov, was arrested by the police and subsequently released with restrictions as the investigation continues.

In the shocking CCTV footage, four people are seen walking on the zebra crossing as hordes of Saint Petersburg residents bustle along the pavement.

The sound of screeching tyres splits the air and a white car is seen overtaking another vehicle at speed just before the crossing.

Four pedestrians are caught in the headlights and two opt to run backwards while the two victims try to sprint the last metre to the pavement.

The first two pedestrians narrowly avoid being hit while the two victims are rammed by the BMW and sent flying onto the pavement.

Meanwhile, a man is seen walking across the street next to the crossing who apparently does not notice the speeding car and narrowly avoids being hit himself.

The man reaches the pavement and apparently startles as both women crash to the ground around him.
