Moment E-Scooter Rider Nearly Wiped Out By Bus After Jumping Red Light Amid Spike In Accidents

This is the moment an e-scooter rider is nearly wiped out by a bus after jumping a red light amid a surge in scooter accidents in Spain.

The incident was filmed at the intersection of Paseo de Gracia and Gran Via in Barcelona in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia, and the clip was later shared on Twitter by ‘Anti-radar Catalunya’ where it has been viewed over 250,000 times.

In the footage, the man is seen whizzing along the cycling lane on his electric scooter before apparently jumping a red light without noticing.

The scooterist is about to join the traffic when a bus comes hurtling along and narrowly misses him.

The man is forced to ride into the kerb and jump onto the pavement in front of dozens of onlookers to avoid being rammed.

According to the Mapfre Foundation, there were 100 electric scooter accidents in Spain in 2020, 24 more than in 2019, with a surge expected this year due to their increasing popularity.

The study said that 98 percent of accidents occur in cities and 60 percent are caused by collisions with other vehicles.

According to the British consumer technology company Nextbase, the UK is expected to see up to 200,000 electric scooter accidents this year due to a surging increase in their popularity.

By the end of 2021, over a million UK citizens are expected to own an e-scooter, and one in five is predicted to be involved in an accident.

Nextbase said 63 percent of accidents will involve new e-bike owners.
