A Dutchman creating a disturbance in a Spanish shopping centre who nobody could understand and who then collapsed and later died was found to have suffocated after he swallowed his car keys by accident.

The unknown tourist from the Netherlands, aged 37, wаs on holiday with his family and was being thrown out of the shopping centre by security guards when he collapsed in the district of Sarria-Sant Gervasi located in the Spanish city of Barcelona on 5th August.

The man was staying near the supermarket on Riera de Cassoles avenue in the Catalan capital.

According to local media, the Dutchman entered the supermarket mid-morning and was loud and seemed excited about something, but nobody could understand what he was saying.

It it is unclear if this is because he was speaking Dutch or because he was unable to speak at all because he had swallowed the car keys.

As he was disturbing the routine of the shopping centre and staff could not understand him, security guards asked him to leave the facility, and then tried to forcibly remove him.

However, as they tried to take him to the door he lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground where he lay twitching in front of the shocked security guards and shoppers.

The security guards then tried to resuscitate the man who was showing no signs of life, before the emergency services arrived and took over.

To their surprise, the paramedics then found that the man’s throat was blocked by his car keys.

They managed to get them out of his throat and stabilised him before taking him to the nearby Sant Pau Hospital.

However, despite doctors’ best efforts, he died a short while later.

Authorities offered the family psychological support and informed the Dutch consulate, as well as the Barcelona City Council of the incident.

The reason the man swallowed the car keys are still unknown, however, the case has now been taken over by the autonomous police force responsible for law enforcement in Catalonia known as the Auxiliary Force (Mossos d’Esquadra).

The police have not disclosed further details about the 37-year-old man’s death.
