Mexico Cops Arrest 2 For Killing Journalist In Street

The Mexican police have arrested two men for shooting dead a journalist who was reporting on the discovery of human remains on a city street.

Journalist Israel Vazquez, who worked for the local newspaper El Salmantino, was killed in the city of Salamanca in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato in the early hours of 9th November.

During a coordinated operation involving the state police, the National Guard and the Mexican Army, the authorities have arrested suspects Martin Eduardo and Jose Luis.

The pair of suspected cartel members are accused of shooting the journalist dead after he discovered human remains in the street.

The investigation is ongoing.

Guanajuato is considered one of the most violent states in Mexico due to the ongoing turf wars between rival drug cartels.

On 2nd November, another journalist called Jesus Alfonso Pinuelas, 43, was shot dead while riding his motorbike through Ciudad Obregon in the northern Mexican state of Sonora.

On 29th October, news anchor Arturo Alba Medina, 49, was shot dead while leaving the TV studio in Ciudad Juarez in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

According to the NGO Reporters Without Borders, 10 journalists were killed in Mexico during 2019, and at least eight have been murdered so far this year.
