A Mexican man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother-in-law in a satanic ritual and he reportedly told cops he killed the woman as a human sacrifice to stop the COVID-19 pandemic.

The shocking incident took place in the municipality of Ecatepec in the central Mexican state of Mexico when police were called to a house after neighbours reportedly heard screams asking for help and gunshots.

Cops went to the scene and reportedly found the victim, who has not been named in reports but was 54 years old, with the suspect, named in reports as Ramon, 25, surrounded by candles and pages of notes.

The suspect was arrested and local media report in his statement to police he allegedly said that the murder was a ritual to end the coronavirus pandemic in which human sacrifice was needed.

Local media have described the ritual as “satanic” and the suspect reportedly told the investigators he “was doing humanity a favour” with the murder.

It is unclear if the suspect has been charged.

According to the latest statistics from the Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has suffered 2,439 confirmed cases of COVID-19 leading to 125 deaths and 633 recoveries.
