This is the moment a spectator wanders onto the track in celebration during an allegedly illegal horse race before being flattened by the runner-up horse which resulted in him being hospitalised in a critical condition.

The incident was filmed by a crowd member in the municipality of Motozintla in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas and the video was later widely shared on social media.

In the footage, two horses are seen approaching the finish line as they race along a dirt track and spectators cheer from either side.

Just after the winning horse crosses the finish line, a heavyset man steps onto the track while apparently holding a beer and punching the air in celebration.

However, the runner-up horse approaches the finish line and smashes into him, sending him crashing hard to the ground.

According to local media, the unnamed victim suffered chest and head injuries, but had to wait for the paramedics to arrive as there were no emergency services on hand at the illegal racecourse.

He was taken to a nearby medical centre where he remains in critical condition in intensive care, according to reports.

Many local residents reportedly blamed the mayor, Jorge Villatoro, for allowing the event to allegedly take place without proper permits or security measures.

They even claimed that the mayor took part in parades beforehand to help promote the race.

It is currently unclear whether the authorities are looking into the matter.
