This is the moment a bull sprints over a man at a bullfighting event before turning back and goring him, sending him flying high into the air.

The incident took place on Monday during the traditional “corralejas” event which sees onlookers jump into the bullring to participate in the bullfighting in the municipality of San Pedro, in the northern Colombian department of Sucre.

In the video, Miguel Antonio Beleno Gonzalez, known as El Mono Macancan, a ‘banderillero’ bullfighter who sticks barbed flags in the bull’s shoulders, can be seen lying on the ground in the bullring when a huge bull sprints at him.

The bull charges at him and he sticks the flag in its back as it sprints over him. Gonzalez then tries to get to his feet but the bull turns on him and begins goring him on the ground.

The huge bull then lifts him into the air with its horns as onlookers scream before the animal runs away.

Local media report Gonzalez was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Mardonio Mejia, the spokesman for the event said: “The man put the banderillas on the bull, the bull turned around, searched for him on the ground and lifted him twice”, and added “his death was immediate”.

The Society for the Protection of Animals in Colombia has called for an end to the ‘corralejas’ events saying they are abusive of the animals and put people’s lives at risk.

Others have defended the events, such as local salesman Javier Garces who says he uses the bullfights to sell his products and earn money for “my grandchildren’s school material and shoes”.

The bulls are not killed at the end of the ‘corralejas’ events, unlike in traditional bullfighting.
