This footage shows a man desperately clinging to a pillar as a powerful torrent threatens to wash him away and he is now missing after reportedly being swept downstream.

The incident happened on 127 street in the Colombian capital of Bogota in the Capital District in central Bogota.

The footage shows a man clinging on to a bridge pillar while the current is powerfully flowing into his legs.

A woman is heard desperately shouting: “God, help him! The rope is coming, throw it now!”

According to local media, some witnesses told the man could not hold on to the pillar and he fell before the rope was thrown.

Lucilda Gaitan who witnessed the moment told local TV news programme ‘Noticias Caracol’: “We heard him shouting and we went to see what was happening and he was asking for help. We threw some ropes to help him but it was impossible.”

A spokesperson for the Bogota Firefighters confirmed to online newspaper ‘Lafm’ that they are still looking for the man who disappeared under the bridge.

The identity of the man is unknown and it is unclear why has caught on the pillar.

Reports state the Colombian capital was hit by heavy rains yesterday with emergency services being called to floods on public roads, streets and private properties.
