A feminist actress, dancer and singer who wanted to take her daughter to a book fair was chucked out when she was mobbed by fans and then accused of dressing inappropriately.
Sama El Masrii, 49, is a prominent campaigner for women’s rights stirring a powerful 2011 film Ala Wahda We Nos about the sexual exploitation of female media workers and journalists.
Two years later she started producing satirical YouTube videos criticising the government, the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic functions and was also a vocal critic of Barack Obama’s policy towards Egypt.
She reportedly wanted to take her daughter to the book fair, but when she turned up wearing slippers and a light brown outfit which locals complained left little to the imagination, she quickly attracted many fans that wanted to take selfies.
She initially tried to refuse but then so many turned up, she had to give in. But the small crowd attracted the attention of security services at the 51st Cairo International Book Fair, who told her what she was wearing was inappropriate, and demanded that she leave.
The exhibition will continue until fourth of February, with the theme “Egypt Africa .. Culture of Diversity”.
