These images show a large iguana being rescued from power lines overhanging a city street after it reportedly caused power cuts and sparks every time it moved.

The rescue took place on 30th January in the neighbourhood of Miguel Idalgo in the city of Ciudad Madero in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas after the large herbivorous lizard kept on causing power outages.

According to local media, residents contacted the emergency services after they saw the iguana trapped on the power lines on 29th January.

The trapped lizard reportedly caused a flurry of sparks and power cuts every time it moved.

Before the iguana was rescued by firefighters, local resident Aracely Castillo told local media: “It is on the power lines and every time it moves there is a shower of sparks and the electricity goes off. It is affecting the whole neighbourhood.”

According to local media, firefighters arrived on the scene the next day at around 11.40 am and rescued the iguana after it had been tripping the area’s power for around 19 hours.

Residents had previously tried positioning a ladder next to the utility pole to encourage the lizard to come down of its own accord but were unsuccessful.

Reports said the iguana was taken to the local fire station where it will remain until the authorities find it a permanent home.
