This is the moment a lucky motorist cheats death as a shipping container falls off the back of a lorry and onto on a busy motorway just as they overtake the HGV.

The near miss was capped by a traffic camera on the Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Expressway over the city of Taizhou in East China’s Zhejiang Province.

The footage dated 29th November shows the heavy goods vehicle driven by Mr Zhang carry a Maersk shipping container on its trailer when a spare wheel suddenly falls from a lorry in front of him.

The lorry wheel rolls onto the road leaving Mr Zhang with no time to react as he drives over it with his tractor and trailer.

The trailer bounces up and the shipping container is shaken loose from its clamps before collapsing to its left onto the motorway.

A white saloon car avoids being crushed by the metal box by about 3 feet, the video shows.

According to the police, the spare lorry wheel belonged to heavy goods vehicle driver Mr Bao, who they say was unaware he had lost the wheel until the authorities called him.

Mr Zhang had failed to maintain a safe distance between him and the lorry ahead, and he had only clamped two of the four safety devices securing the Maersk container on his trailer, the police said.

Further investigations are ongoing, with no charges announced at the time of writing.

The police said Mr Zhang’s container was put back on his lorry and traffic resumed about an hour later.
