This heart-stopping footage shows a girl tripping in front of a van which runs her over but causes no serious injuries thanks to the new schoolbooks in her rucksack.

The girl, who is believed to be around seven years old, was playing with friends after school and running up and down a set of steps near the entrance of their residential district.

The footage dated 26th December 2019 shows the child wearing a pink coat flashing across the screen as she sprints around with her rucksack on her back in the county of Wulian, which is in Rizhao City in East China’s Shandong Province.

As she runs back down the steps, she suddenly trips and falls onto the ground at the very moment the silver van is driven through the gate.

The vehicle drives right over her and appears to pin one of her legs, leaving one witness covering her eyes in horror and running away.

The male van driver climbs out of his vehicle and immediately begins trying to rescue the girl together with a number of other residents.

Liu Kai, one of the rescuers who helped free the schoolgirl, recalled: “When I arrived I saw a few senior citizens trying to lift the van.

“I joined in too, but the van was too heavy and couldn’t be moved.

“I called on a nearby fishmonger to help, and we finally managed to pick up the front of the vehicle.”

The video shows the girl freeing her leg and immediately standing back up as witnesses check on her.

Mr Liu said she was spared a potentially broken leg – if not worse – thanks to the new schoolbooks in her rucksack, which helped prop up the van’s wheel as it drove over her leg.

The child’s parents were called and she was taken to a local hospital for a check-up, which confirmed that she suffered no serious injuries before discharging her shortly after.

Mr Liu recalled: “The child was extremely lucky. The new books in her bag essentially blocked the van wheel, which was pinning her leg.

“Had the bag not been there, the full weight of the van would’ve come down on her leg.”

Locals residents said the girl was in a so-called blind spot, with the van driver unlikely to have spotted her as he drove through the gate.

It was unclear at the time of writing whether local county police were involved in the case.
