A glass fronted toilet in the shop window of a German bakery has set tongues wagging after passersby were treated to a full view of patrons doing their business.

A photo of the toilet in the window of the Backwerk bakery branch in Aschaffenburg, a town in north-western Bavaria, Germany has given the words public toilet a whole new meaning.

The original poster Chris Nanoo who posted the picture on Twitter wrote: “Welcome to Backwerk Aschaffenburg, now new with a panorama toilet.”

Many readers commented on the curious picture.

Shadowmind posted: “Now that’s what I call transparency for the customer.”

Gruebenbaer posted: “At least you can see which workers wash their hands.”

Peterjustus said: “At least people would be quick and leave the toilet nice and clean.”

There was also speculation about why the toilet was viewable, some people suggested it was a one-way mirror or some thought it probably went dark when you entered.

Others speculated it was a marketing gag.

However the District manager of the bakery chain Vito Erba was able to shed some light on the curious picture.

He said: “We were having some works done, and the shop was closed. We are getting some coverings for the windows.”

The director of the company Abbas Akbari also saw the funny side he said: “Everyone who takes a picture of themselves with me in front of the window and tags it with the words ‘Panorama toilet’ can get a free coffee.”

The window has since been covered up.
