This viral video – seen nearly 18 million times in just 24 hours – shows a terrified male tourist being helped off a glass-bottom observation deck.

The petrified visitor was one of hundreds of thousands drawn to the stunning viewing deck known as the ‘Glass Flying Saucer’ during China’s lengthy National Day holidays last week.

The new attraction opened in August this year and is part of the Lingxi Mountain Scenic Area in the county of Anji, which is in Huzhou City in Zhejiang Province in East China.

The transparent observation deck juts out 88 metres (288 feet) from the mountainside, leaving tourists with an unobstructed view of the 300-metre (984-foot) drop to the lush valley below.

The male tourist in question was reportedly drawn to the popular tourist site but did not realise just how terrifying the experience would be.

In the trending social media video, the man can be seen staring up at the sky and refusing to look down as a uniformed security guard helps him down the glass steps of the viewing deck.

He gingerly descends one step at a time while insisting on keeping his eyes pointed upwards to the sky.

Netizens on China’s Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo have liked the clip nearly 100,000 times, and left tens of thousands of comments sympathising with the tourists.

‘Sneaker Chaofan’ wrote: “He wouldn’t have known he was scared of heights until he went up there!”

‘Jiangsu Shenmi Shimin Liunvshi’ said: “Guard: ‘This is hard for me too.’”

Adult tickets for the Lingxi Mountain Scenic Area are available online starting at (7 GBP).
