A builder digging during the construction of a house has found this pre-Hispanic skull and skeleton.

The bones were found in the 2 de Abril neighbourhood in the town of Humahuaca, in the north-western Argentine province of Jujuy by a construction worker who was digging in the area in order to build a house.

Valentina Millon, Director of the Heritage Department of Jujuy, told local media: “In a private house where the digging for the foundations of a house was being done these human archaeological remains were found.”

The remains were taken by an archaeologist from the province’s Direction of Heritage, the department in charge of keeping the remains for later scientific analysis.

Millon said that two archaeologists working at the scene said that “seemingly they are from the pre-Hispanic era, due to the way the body was found in the burial”.

She added: “Items or cultural remains were not found with the body which would help us to have more information, so research will be done to find out the age of the pieces found.”

She said that in the Quebrada de Humahuaca mountain valley, there are archaeological remains constantly appearing in locations that are now urban areas.

She asked residents who find archaeological items to call the authorities, as it is very important their recovery is carried out by proper specialists to save the remains.
