A teenage female boxer who was put in an induced coma after she was knocked out in the ring has died five days later.

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away at the age of 18 on Thursday, 2nd September after she was knocked out by opponent Marie-Pier Houle.

The Mexican welterweight was knocked out during a GYM Gala Boxing match in the city of Montreal in Canada on Saturday, 28th August.

The fight was stopped by the referee in the fourth round and Marie-Pier was awarded victory by technical knockout.

It was while the Canadian fighter was celebrating her victory that Jeanette started to suffer convulsions.

Paramedics then took her to the closest hospital, where doctors decided that putting her in an induced coma would guarantee her best chance of survival.

Sadly, the Aguascalientes native did not pull through, and she passed away in hospital in Montreal with her partner and coach by her side.

Tragically, her family could not reach her in time due to passport issues.

Jeanette racked up two wins and four losses during her brief professional career, which began in January 2018.

Her only fight outside of Mexico was the one against her Canadian opponent that ended in tragedy.

The coaches and promoters who agreed to the fight have come under criticism, given Jeanette’s mixed record and lack of experience arguably meant she was unprepared for such a big fight.

Before the bout, her 31-year-old opponent’s record stood at three wins and one draw. She is suspended by the Quebec Boxing Commission until 4th September (tomorrow).

The World Boxing Council has expressed its regret at Jeanette’s passing.
