The brave dog that was shot in the head while defending its elderly owners from a gang of armed robbers has died after fighting for its life for nearly three weeks.

The poor pooch, 12-year-old Malevo, was adopted by Renato Santoni and his wife 10 years ago and was used as a guard dog at the property.

During the robbery, Malevo was shot in the head while its owners were forced to hand over their valuables at gunpoint, according to local media.

Reports said they stole 35,000 ARS (456 GBP), including the elderly man’s pension that he collected from the bank earlier that day, as well as a mobile phone, a TV and a firearm.

Santoni told local media that he “could not even look at Malevo” after his beloved dog had been shot by the thieves.

Police on the scene took the unconscious dog to the veterinary campus at the National University of La Plata for emergency treatment.

According to local media, the Border Collie dog did not die of its head wound but from “external issues” caused by its deteriorating health.

Reports said that Malevo was recovering well four days after the incident, and could recognise its owners again.

The owners thanked the clinic staff and the police for trying to save the dog’s life.

The investigation into the robbery is ongoing.
