The arrest five months after her tragic death includes the fact that the ring he said he had placed on her finger when she accepted his offer was still in his pocket, and the romantic location showed scenes of a violent struggle.

The alleged killer, Nizamettin Gursu, whose age was not given, meticulously planned the proposal to his girlfriend Yesim Demir, 39, taking her to the romantic clifftop together with a picnic basket and music box as well as alcohol to celebrate after she accepted.

He told cops that after she had said “Yes”, they had been happily drinking, and when he went to the car to get more supplies, he heard a scream and then discovered, to his horror, that she had vanished.

He said she had fallen off the cliff and plunged more than 100 feet to her death from the beauty spot in Polente Cape in Turkey during the romantic sunset picnic in July.

But the woman’s family complained that she had been planning to break up with him, and would not have accepted the proposal.

While investigating, shocked police officers found that the ring he claimed he had given her when she accepted his proposal was not on her finger and had been in his pocket. It was also still in its box.

The suspicions were strengthened after they also discovered broken glasses and a broken music speaker at the picnic spot, which indicated that far from there being a romantic union, there had been a violent row.

Police finally seized Gursu after Yesim’s suspicious family filed a complaint against him.

The family also provided further grounds for suspicion by saying that graphic designer Yesim suffered from panic attacks and would never have been so close to a cliff edge voluntarily.

At the time of Yesim’s death, Gursu played the heartbroken boyfriend.

He said: “We chose it to have a romantic memory after the proposal.

“We drank some alcohol. Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down.”

Paramedics battled for 45 minutes to save Yesim’s life, but she died without regaining consciousness.

Gursu is being held in custody pending trial.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July 2021.

According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’, which is “a digital memorial for women killed by violence” and is updated daily, 393 women were killed by men in 2022, while 376 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
