All Sushi Restaurants In Naples Inspected After Boy, 15, Dies After Lunch With Pals

An inspection has been carried out in all Japanese restaurants in the Naples area after a 15-year-old Italian boy died days after enjoying a sushi lunch with pals.

Luca Piscopo, from the quarter of Soccavo in the Italian city of Naples, visited an unnamed sushi restaurant in the quarter of Vomero with his friends on 23rd November.

According to local reports, Luca and his friends suffered symptoms of food poisoning, and while the others quickly recovered, the victim’s condition continued to worsen, with vomiting, a high fever and diarrhoea.

Tests showed that he was infected with the Salmonella enteritidis bacterium, which can be transmitted by contaminated food and water, direct animal contact, and sometimes from person to person.

The victim’s local GP prescribed unspecified drugs to treat the illness, however the teen’s condition deteriorated and he reportedly died in his sleep on 2nd December.

His family found him dead when they tried to wake him up for school.

The public prosecutor’s office subsequently launched an investigation against the restaurant owner and the GP who prescribed the drugs to treat the illness.

On 28th December, the local authorities carried an inspection of Japanese and other ethnic restaurants in the Naples region after discovering some health discrepancies at the accused restaurant concerning hygiene, product tracking, and their food storage.

Meanwhile, the authorities are still awaiting the boy’s autopsy results to determine whether his death was caused by food poisoning, medical negligence or some other reason.
