Turkish Man, 23, Risks Losing Feet After Walking Barefoot In Snow Amid Claims He Was Robbed By Migrant

A Turkish man risks having his feet amputated to frostbite after his family claimed he was robbed down to his shoes by a migrant.

However, the police have determined that he passed out in the extreme cold while trying to walk to work after his car had broken down.

The family of the victim, named as Berkay Koklu, claimed that he had been mugged by an Afghan migrant in the district of Beylikduzu in the European side of Istanbul in north-western Turkey and was left shoeless on the roadside on 24th January.

They said he had set out that morning for the Gurpinar Fish Market, where he worked, but was robbed by the migrant on his way.

The victim’s family said the thief stole Koklu’s mobile phone, clothes and even his footwear before leaving him on the icy street in freezing conditions.

He walked a long distance in the extreme cold before hailing a passing taxi.

He asked the cabbie to take him straight to hospital and doctors diagnosed severe frostbite on his feet, saying that amputation could be a possibility.

Following the family’s claim that Koklu was robbed, a foreign national wearing the victim’s coat was filmed trying to sell his phone in a shop.

The shop worker, named as Emre Tambahceci, was holding the phone when the victim’s family called.

Realising the seller was a foreign national and the caller was Turkish, Tambahceci decided to take the call and discovered that it was Kokul’s family desperately trying to find him.

The shop worker called the police and officers arrested the suspect after reviewing the store CCTV footage and finding the man wearing Koklu’s coat.

During the investigation, the police determined that the suspected thief, named as S.H., had found the victim’s belonging by the side of the road and had attempted to sell the phone in the shop with the help of a translator.

Meanwhile, it was learned that Koklu’s car had broken down on his way to work and he had tried to continue by foot, but passed out due to the extreme cold.

He reportedly told the police that he had no memory of what had happened. However, he was not found to have been assaulted during an examination and it was determined that he had not been robbed by the migrant.

S.H. was released by the authorities, but reportedly faces deportation from Turkey, as he was found to be living in the country illegally.
