Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has praised his upcoming Champions League rival Pep Guardiola saying “he has always shown” he is the best “first at Barcelona then at Bayern Munich now at Manchester City.”

Former World Cup champion Zidane, 47, made the comments at a press conference as Real Madrid and Manchester City are set to play their Champions League Round of 16 match tomorrow (Wednesday).

Zidane praised former Barcelona boss Guardiola, 49, as the best manager in the world and “has always shown it. First at Barcelona, then at Bayern Munich now at Manchester City.

“He has always shown it. It is my opinion, there are other people that think others are the best. There many managers in football but I think it is him.”

However, he went on to say: “It is Madrid v City only, not Guardiola v Zidane. It is a football match and what people want to watch is just that.

“We are happy because we want to play these matches and that is it.”

When asked if City’s two-year ban from European competitions or if being 22 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool could influence their performance for better or worse Zidane said: “Neither.

“They are a very good club, they have demonstrated it. They are going to come to play. We have to have a good match, that is the point, to give your maximum but above all else focus on what we are doing right.”

City and ‘Los Blancos’ are set to play their first Champions League Round of 16 match in the Spanish capital tomorrow (Wednesday).
