A woman who noticed cages scattered in a snow-covered forest beside a busy motorway was shocked to find them filled with 28 adorable kittens.

Russian Elena Makogon and her husband had decided to make a brief stop while travelling down the motorway outside of the city of Surgut in central Russia’s Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug region.

She said: “We were on the way home, and then made a turn on the motorway. When I looked outside the window I saw cages.”

Elena noted that initially she and her husband wanted to pick a couple of cages as she thought there would be useful if she took them home.

But as she got nearer she was shocked to see that they were not actually empty and to his surprise, there were almost 30 young cats inside.

She said: “When we approached the cages with flashlights we saw dozens of kittens.”

The pair simply could not leave the fluff balls dying in the cold and decided to take care of them.

She added: “We immediately put up a posters about them.”

The couple has also been given the support of an animal protection organisation “Dai Lapu” (Gimme a paw).

It’s team has promised to take care of the felines indefinitely should they not find new homes.

But fortunately, within no time all the kittens were taken in by goodhearted locals.

According to local media reports police have found a person who brought the kittens to die by the road but no expiration was given as to why they had done so and why they had left them in the cages.

Police are considering what action to take against the suspect.
