A woman driver has lost licence after traffic cops spotted her doing two U-turns on a busy motorway because she thought her slip road was closed and feared getting lost.

The unnamed motorist had been travelling on the Beijing-Taipei Expressway over the city of Xuzhou, in East China’s Jiangsu Province, when she suddenly panicked and tried to go back to where she came from.

Traffic camera footage of the incident on 2nd November shows the woman slowing down and suddenly doing a U-turn on the motorway.

But after driving a few dozen feet, she suddenly turns around again after apparently changing her mind.

Chen Yilong, with the Xuzhou traffic police detachment, said: “We tracked down the driver’s contact details and ordered her to wait for arriving officers at the nearest motorway exit.”

The woman was brought back to a police station and explained to investigators: “I saw a sign saying there were roadworks up ahead.

“I misinterpreted that to mean the road I wanted to take was closed, and I was afraid of getting lost, so I turned around when there were no other cars.”

The woman driver made a second turn after realising she was the only person driving the wrong way, reports said.

Xuzhou police fined the woman 200 RMB (22 GBP) for the stunt and docked 12 points from her licence, resulting in a driving suspension.

She will be eligible to retake her licence in 12 months’ time.
