An Indian woman has had to drag her 100-year-old mother through the streets on her bed to withdraw 16 GBP from the bank who insisted on physical verification.
The incident took place in the village of Bargaon in the district of Naupara in the eastern Indian state of Odisha when 60-year-old Punjimati Dei had to withdraw 1,500 INR (16 GBP) from the account of her bedridden mother Labhe Baghel.
According to local media, bank manager Ajit Pradhan told Dei that she had to bring her elderly mother to the bank for physical verification to release the money from her account.
The woman said she had no choice but to drag her 100-year-old mum through the streets on her bed so that the bank would authorise the withdrawal.
However, district collector Madhusmita Sahoo told local media that Dei decided to drag her mother to the bank despite the manager offering to visit her house the following day to approve verification.
Sahoo added that the bank is managed by one person and it was difficult to attend to the woman’s request on the same day so he promised to visit her the next day.
