A man has been arrested after he apparently slit his wife’s throat and left her dying on the bed.

Relatives had become worried after they were unable to contact victim Aysenur Akkurt.

They called police, who went to the couple’s home in Sarkoy, Turkey, on 19th January.

They climbed up a ladder and gained entry through a window.

Inside, they came across the grim scene of Aysenur lying on the bed with a slit throat and brute Ridvan Kurt lying on the floor with a slashed wrist and stab wounds throughout his body.

The two were taken to Sarkoy Hospital by ambulance.

Aysenur, 30, arrived in time to receive treatment, but medics were unable to save her life.

Kurt, 33, was transferred to Tekirdag City Hospital, where, at the time of reporting, he remained in a serious condition.

He is hospitalised under police guard on suspicion of murdering his wife and attempting suicide.

Local media did not speculate on a motive for the crime but revealed that Kurt has nine entries on his criminal record.

He and Aysenur were living together, having married in a religious ceremony, which has no legal standing in Turkey.

Photos show the couple with a school-aged girl. It is not clear if she is their daughter.

Police are investigating the case.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July 2021.

According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’ – “a digital memorial for women killed by violence” – 393 women were killed by men in 2022, while 14 femicides have been committed in Turkey so far this year.
