Video Shows Arrest In Italy Of Romanian Wanted Over UK Deaths Of 39 Trafficked Vietnamese

This footage shows the moment Italian police arrest a Romanian citizen wanted on an international arrest warrant over the deaths of 39 Vietnamese people being smuggled into the UK.

A European arrest warrant had been issued by the UK last April for Stefan Damian Dragos, 28, who is believed to have supplied the truck that was used to smuggle the group of migrants into the country shortly before they were found dead in October 2019. The migrants that included two as young as 15 were hidden in a container on the back of the lorry.

The discovery of the vehicle containing the dead migrants on an industrial estate east of London put a spotlight on the trafficking of people from poor regions, and the risks they take to get to the West.

The arrest was organised in conjunction with Essex Police and was carried out in the town of Cinisello Balsamo north of the Italian city of Milan.

Most of those who died were from the same region of north-central Vietnam in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.

The arrest of the Romanian citizen follows the jailing of four men in January after they were found guilty of manslaughter.
