A veteran Latin actress has died on her 99th birthday just 16 hours after her actor husband passed away.

Belgica Castro, who was born on 6th March 1921, died on her 99th birthday just hours after her theatrical husband Alejandro Sieveking died aged 85.

According to local media, Sieveking passed away following a long-term battle with skin cancer.

Meanwhile, veteran Chilean actress Castro, who suffered with Alzheimer’s since 2017, died hours later of as yet unconfirmed causes.

Culture minister Consuelo Valdes said: “While we mourn the passing of our friend Alejandro Sieveking, the country’s art scene has been dealt another blow, the loss of the great Belgica Castro, one of the leading female voices of national theatre over the past 75 years.

Castro was a leading film, stage and TV actress who had appeared in over 200 plays and movies.

She received the medal of the University of Chile in 1999 and the medal of the Senate of Chile in 2008, among other rewards.

Castro and Sieveking were married for 58 years and they had both received the National Prize of Art of Chile.

According to local media, the couple was buried together in a ceremony attended by loved ones and notable faces from Latin film and theatre.
