A crime reporter has died after being shot in the stomach by a pair of thugs as they robbed his motorbike.

Marcos Misiaszek, 31, received two gunshot wounds to the stomach during the robbery which took place as he was riding his motorbike in the city of Resistencia, in the northern Argentine province of Chaco.

The thugs fled the scene and a local resident rushed to help Misiaszek. His family were called and he was rushed to the Perrando Hospital, with his father saying the journalist was asking if he would live.

He arrived in a serious condition having lost a lot of blood. Doctors reportedly asked for urgent donors but before Ana Maria Silvestri of the Intensive Care Unit confirmed his death only a few hours later. The injuries caused by the gunshot wounds were the cause of death.

Cops launched an investigation, finding bullet cartridges and checking CCTV cameras at the scene of the crime.

Two suspects named Fabricio Ricardo Fernandez, 18, and German Alberto Ayala, 21, were later arrested on the outskirts of the city of Residencia.

Both were riding a motorbike and are suspected to have robbed three other people close to the scene where Misiaszek was shot.

They have both previously been investigated on suspicion of robbery and the case has been filed as a homicide with the use of a firearm. They remain under arrest and are awaiting interviews from prosecutors.

The victim wrote crime news for the Bajo La Lupa website as well as singing in the groove-metal band Backbone.

It is unclear if his death is linked to his work as a journalist.
