Her elderly relative, Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, Prince of Naples, died on Saturday after having done away with centuries of tradition whereby only male heirs could inherit the title and passing on the title to his granddaughter Vittoria Cristina Adelaide Chiara Maria of Savoy.

The 20-year-old, who is the great-granddaughter of the last King of Italy, is now the heiress to the throne after she was formally named as the title holder in 2020, and his death at 86 has been announced by his family in a press release.

Vittoria is the eldest daughter of Vittorio Emanuele’s son Emanuele Filiberto and, according to local media, her father had officially told her: “I will abdicate in favour of my daughter. I’m sure you’ll do better than me. Soon, in Europe, there will be more queens than kings.”

Vittoria was born in Geneva, Switzerland, on 28th December 2003 and her grandfather did away with Salic Law. The ancient Frankish civil law code that dictated that his son should be the next heir, opting instead to choose his granddaughter.
