This is the shocking moment an alleged drink-driver loses control of his vehicle at speed and rams three students head-on who are sent flying into a nearby canal.

The incident took place in Poochakkal in the southern Indian state of Kerala and the driver reportedly knocked over six people in total.

In the footage, the out-of-control driver is seen ploughing into a group of students walking on the roadside after reportedly finishing their exams.

Local media said the impact threw the teenagers into a nearby canal.

The motorist also knocked over a fourth student as well as two people on a bike, according to local media.

The four students have been identified as Anagha, Chandana, Saghi, and Archana, all 17 years old.

Meanwhile, 36-year-old Aneesh and his three-year-old son Vedav were reportedly knocked off a bike by the wayward motorist.

The driver, Anand Mudayil, and 52-year-old passenger Manoj were also hospitalised in the incident, according to reports.

The local police have said that the eight injured people are now out of danger.

The authorities also said that both car occupants were drunk at the time of the accident.

The investigation is ongoing.
