A mother and stepdad accused of beating her two-year-old daughter to death also raped her, say police investigating the killing.

Tragic Sophia de Jesus Ocampo had been dead for hours before her mother took her corpse to hospital on 26th January.

Bizarrely, she later told police in Campo Grande, Brazil, that Sophia had died because she had eaten too much mayonnaise, it has emerged.

An autopsy has revealed that she died from trauma to the cervical spine.

But when her mother, 24-year-old Stephanie de Jesus Da Silva, asked her partner what to do, he texted back: “Make something up, say she fell in the playground.”

The autopsy also revealed that Sophia was raped, reported local media.

Civil Police chief Anne Karine Trevisan told local media on 6th February: “The medical examiner found that Sophia was killed between 9am and 10am on 26th January, and she was sent to the emergency unit only at 5pm.

“In the afternoon, she was already dead, and her mother and stepfather were at home.”

Da Silva and her blue-haired partner, 25-year-old Christian Campocano Leitheim, are remanded in custody and accused of aggravated murder and statutory rape.

Trevisan revealed the bizarre version of events Da Silva gave during questioning.

She recalled: “In her statement, the mother said Sophia had felt sick, her stomach was swollen because she had eaten too much mayonnaise.

“The stepfather was silent and did not want to speak out.”

Sophia’s biological dad had reported two instances of alleged mistreatment and had made several complaints to child services.

He had spent 13 months battling to get custody of the toddler.

Jean Carlos Ocampo and his male partner, Igor de Andrade, accuse the authorities of inaction and say they could have prevented 31-month-old Sophia’s death.

Police described how the home where Da Silva, Leitheim, and Sophia lived was littered with cigarette butts, cigarette packets, and liquor bottles.

The investigation continues.
