A South African businessman has tracked down and employed the hard-up thief who broke into his vehicle in a car park and stole his belongings.

Sanele ‘Bheseni’ Ngubo, from Clermont in the city of Durban in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, reportedly used a remote signal jammer to break into parked cars and steal valuable inside, such as laptops and smartphones.

However, local businessman Siya Gasa said that he was outraged when he returned to his car on the corner of Broad and Mdu Lembede streets and found it broken into last month.

According to news site IOL, Ngubo made off with Gasa’s ID, driver’s licence, two firearm licences, and a bag of ammunition.

Gasa said that he spent five days trying to track down Ngubo, eventually receiving information which led him to a home in Clermont.

After being confronted by the angry businessman, Ngubo told him that he had sold his belongings to a drug dealer in Mariannridge.

When Gasa met Ngubo’s mother Lindiwe, he realised the family was going through a hard time.

He said: “I realised that the family had not eaten, the food stall in the kitchen was empty. I felt so sad, it was clear that Ngubo stole because he wanted to support his late brother’s child.

“I thought that he deserved a second chance because keeping him in jail could expose him further to crime. He could learn more tricks and become a danger to society.”

Gasa offered the young man a job and Ngubo recently celebrated his 21st birthday during his first week of employment.

Ngubo claimed that the real mastermind behind the car thefts was an old man from Lamontville, and he apologised to his victims.

He also thanked Gasa for giving him a second chance in life.

Ngubo said: “I have realised there are many good people out there that I have hurt through my actions. But that is in the past now. I need to focus on doing good for my family and Gasa who has shown his faith in me.”
